Nevertheless, I Persisted: My 30-Year Journey to the Finish Line
“Nevertheless, she persisted.”
This simple yet powerful phrase became my personal anthem as I walked through one of the most challenging seasons of my life: finishing my college degree after 30 years.
Life, as it often does, had a way of putting dreams on pause. I went through a divorce when my youngest were still infants — while raising a teenage son. Seven years ago, I married a wonderful man who brought healing and joy into my life. With him came not only love, but a beautiful daughter as well. And between navigating all of that, raising children, and building a career, finishing my degree often felt out of reach.
But I couldn’t shake the dream. Deep down, I knew I wasn’t ready to let it go.
Faith + Fight
There were days when exhaustion and self-doubt crept in. Days when I questioned whether I had missed my window. But through faith, perseverance, and the grace of God, I kept moving.
I reminded myself why I started. I leaned on God’s strength when mine ran out. And I held on to the quiet belief that it was still possible.
Encouragement Along the Way
The encouragement from my family and friends became lifelines when I felt overwhelmed. Their words were oxygen. And when I couldn’t hear their voices — I gave myself the pep talks I needed. Because sometimes, the only person who can push you forward… is the one staring back in the mirror.
I found refuge in music. I surrounded myself with inspiration. I made affirmations a daily practice — little sparks of truth that lit my path when it felt dim.
What I Learned
I’ve learned that strength doesn’t mean never feeling weak. It means showing up — even when your heart is heavy and the finish line still feels far off. It means holding on to hope, even when the road is unclear.
If I can finish my degree after 30 years — you can keep going, too. Whatever your dream is, stay with it. Lean on your faith. Trust your voice. Surround yourself with people who remind you who you are.
You are stronger than you think. You are capable of powerful things. And you are never walking alone.
So, when it feels too late, too hard, or too uncertain, whisper this to yourself: “Nevertheless, I persisted.”
With faith, with strength — and always with love,
P.S. I love you. 💙
